Kelly has been working with individuals with disabilities since the mid 70s and with assistive technologies since 1983. Her teaching experiences have been as a teacher assistant, teacher and instructional media specialist in early childhood, preschool and school age programs. She has consulted to university and adult programs concerning access to technology by persons with disabilities. She has a B.S. in special education, an M.S. in educational technology, and holds an Assistive Technology Applications Certificate of Learning from California State University - Northridge. Kelly worked seven years as a consultant with PennTech, the state-wide technology project supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Since 1999, Kelly has maintained an independent business with contract work in educational and assistive technology consultation and training. She has professional development contracts with several manufacturers and CSUN, California State University – Northridge’s Center on Disabilities. She speaks internationally on a wide range of topics including literacy, computer access, technology integration, augmentative and alternative communication, and assistive technology assessment and implementation strategies. Kelly has taught courses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in both the Occupational Therapy and Exceptional Education departments and at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Kelly’s focus areas in assistive technology include technology for people with learning disabilities and significant cognitive disabilities, computer access, augmentative communication, mounting systems, writing and organizational assistants. Her focus areas in educational technology include literacy, instructional remediation, authentic assessment, technology planning and evaluation. She has a strong interest in access to libraries, urban issues in technology and in the organization and training of assistive technology assessment and implementation teams.
